A survey went out to the teachers in June 2020 after the announcement that the school will remain open to help determine the needs of the school. As a result of the survey we have been working on several projects to help the school. A lot of amazing people have come together to share their treasures and talents with us.

Current projects include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Board Members Randy Perreira and James Tyrin worked with Hawaii Community Foundation to help secure funding for updated elementary school textbooks and other curriculum items.  The cost of the books, supplemental materials, and shipping were in excess of $20k. The books that the elementary school had been using had copyright dates from 2001 and 2005 (last time they were able to order new books was in 2005). Since then they have been trying to replace the books as needed but most were now out of print and used replacements were not longer available. On July 20th, we were able to call the Interim Principal, Mrs. Wehrsig and give her the amazing news that CLF was able to assist in securing the funds for this much needed purchase.

  2. Working with Will Lee (SJS c/o ’97 and owner of Will Kill Termites and Pests) to help pay for ground termite treatment badly needed for the preschool building. All three preschool buildings have ground termite tunnels working their way through our beloved school. CLF is happy to partner with Will Kill to get this situation under control for the school. This work will be completed prior to the start of the school year.

  3. On Saturday July 18, 2020, members of the Cardinal Legacy Foundation, along with members of The Rotary Club of Hilo and some volunteer contractors assisted with remodeling and re-configuring the school’s chemistry lab to remove termite infested work stations and open up the classroom space to better accommodate social distancing protocols. This was phase 1 of a 3 phrase project.
